Cambodia Takes Step Towards National Human Rights Institution

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Human Rights Committee in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will hold a regional workshop on Thursday. It will be attended by other human rights institutions from across ASEAN member states, as well as embassies present in the kingdom. The aim is to establish a National Human Rights Institution in Cambodia based on the Paris Principles.

The regional workshop is expected to gain inputs for the draft law on the establishment of the National Human Rights Institution in Cambodia. It will be attended by over 80 participants including representatives from various embassies in the kingdom, the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights as well as officers of the National Human Rights Institutions of Philippines and Malaysia. It will be held mainly via videoconference with some delegates attending in person.

The president of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, who is also the Minister Attached to the Prime Minister, Keo Remy, will preside over the conference together with United Nations Resident Coordinator, Pauline Tamesis. It is expected that participants will share their experiences in handling human rights institutions in their own nations which will assist Cambodia in drafting the law needed for the creation of one of its own.
